Our ASCENT Researcher-in-Residence model helps local authorities deliver high-quality research and embed the use of evidence in practice at team and organisational levels, through tailored support from postdoctoral researchers embedded within organisations.
Between April 2024 and March 2026, the ASCENT programme, hosted by ARC East of England, received co-funding from the NIHR East of England Research Delivery Network, Cambridgeshire County Council, Norfolk County Council, and Thurrock Council to host five Researchers-in-Residence.
These researchers were embedded across adult and children’s social care services, with some roles extending to July, September, and October 2026. Hosted within quality assurance or commissioning teams, they:
- Upskilled social care staff in research skills, including applying evidence in practice and understanding funding opportunities
- Advised on the design and delivery of research and service evaluation projects
- Strengthened research infrastructure, including governance and audit processes
Researchers-in-Residence work closely with local authority staff to co-develop work plans that address organisational needs and gaps, implementing targeted interventions to build sustainable research capacity.
