We are committed to supporting the development of outstanding early career researchers wishing to conduct applied research that has the potential to deliver an impact on patients, public and policy regionally and nationally.
Between 2020 and 2025, ARC East of England fully or partially funded 15 PhD posts across our partner universities, achieving an 87% completion rate as of March 2026. Graduates have confirmed their first destinations, which include postdoctoral positions at national and international universities.
We plan to fully or co-fund seven PhD posts starting in October 2027. These opportunities will be advertised by our partner universities, Anglia Ruskin University, University of Cambridge, University of East Anglia, University of Essex, and University of Hertfordshire, on their websites in late 2026 or early 2027. Sign up for our ARC East of England Newsletter to receive updates and notifications about our future opportunities.
If you are thinking about applying for an externally funded doctoral award, such as the NIHR Academy Doctoral Award, we can help you find academic supervisors and mentors at our partner universities, connecting you with experienced researchers in your field.
For pre-doctoral health and care staff looking to start a research career, our Research and Impact Fellowship Programme offers hands-on experience leading small-scale research projects. The programme brings fresh thinking, innovation, and practical insight to health and care research. It is open to staff across the health, care, and voluntary sectors in the East of England. Support is also available for completed fellows who wish to further develop their clinical academic careers by pursuing doctoral training.
