Scoping review of young people's involvement in child maltreatment research

The project was a scoping review to find out what we know about the involvement of young people in maltreatment research.

Background

Young people face barriers to participation in research, as researchers seek to balance their right to protection with their right to be involved. This is particularly relevant in research on sensitive topics such as child maltreatment. Inclusive research should involve young people not only as participants (for example, being interviewed) but also throughout the research process, from study design to dissemination of findings.

Project Aims

The scoping review aimed to explore published academic and grey literature on young people’s involvement in maltreatment research at an international level.
It mapped how young people are involved, the barriers and facilitators to their involvement, and the impact of their contributions on research processes and outcomes.

Project Activity

  • Conducted a scoping review of the literature.
  • Involved a group of young people in discussing emerging themes.

Who was involved?

  • Prof Jeanette Cossar, PI, University of East Anglia
  • Dr Anne Murphy, Senior Research Assistant, University of East Anglia
