Project IIR27

Scoping review of young people's involvement in child maltreatment research

The project is a scoping review to find out what we know about the involvement of young people in maltreatment research.

Background

Young people face barriers to participation in research as researchers attempt to balance their right to protection with their rights to involvement. This is particularly the case with young people's involvement in research on sensitive topics such as child maltreatment. Inclusive involvement in research should involve young people. Involvement is considered not only in relation to participating in research (for example being interviewed about an issue) but also being involved in the research process from designing the project all the way through to telling people about the research findings.

Project Aims

  • The scoping review will explore what is published in the academic and grey literature on young people's involvement in maltreatment research in the international literature.
  • We aim to map how young people are involved, barriers and facilitators to involvement and the impact of young people's involvement on research process and outcomes.

Project Activity

  • We are doing a scoping review of the literature.
  • We plan to involve a group of young people in discussing emerging themes.
