Tamara Backhouse

Dr Tamara Backhouse is a Research Fellow at the University of East Anglia (UEA) and she is the Co-Theme Lead for NIHR ARC East of England’s Social Care, Dementia & Ageing Theme Lead theme. In addition, she leads the Cross-ARC Care Home Network.

Tamara was a previous NIHR Dementia Capacity Building Postdoctoral Fellow with ARC East of England. She recently completed an Alzheimer’s Society Junior Fellowship examining refusals of care from people with advanced dementia. Her current research aims to improve personal care interactions for people with advanced dementia. Tamara’s academic background is in sociology and psychology and her research focuses on the care of people with dementia in hospitals, living in care homes, and receiving home care. Tamara is a member of INTERDEM, a pan-European network of researchers collaborating in research on Psychosocial Interventions in Dementia and the British Society of Gerontology. Tamara has extensive experience working in care homes and very sheltered accommodation as a care assistant for older people.
