Project AMM33

Implementing shared decision making across Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System

By December 2022, we aimed for all clinicians in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System to be routinely undertaking shared decision making consultations.

Summary

Shared decision making is a key component of personalised care. It is a process by which people are supported to understand their options and given the opportunity to consider information that might influence their choice.

All clinicians with a role in offering people treatments, investigations, therapies or interventions will be required to incorporate  shared decision making except in life threatening situations.

Project Aims

  • February 2022: estimated the extent to which shared decision making is routine practice in consultations with patients.
  • February 2022: explored the barriers and enablers to clinicians making shared decision making routine practice in consultations with patients.
  • March 2022: designed the shared decision making implementation strategy.
  • April 2022: delivered, evaluated and refined the shared decision making implementation strategy.
  • December 2022: estimated the extent to which shared decision making is routine practice in consultations with patients.

Project Activity

  • Clinician surveys

Clinicians were surveyed at two time points – Feb and Dec 2022.

The surveys captured what current shared decision making practice looked like and the extent to which they are implementing shared decision making consultations.

  • Shared decision making strategy

Implemented, delivered, evaluated and refined a shared decision making strategy across Mid and South Essex ICS – Mar to Dec 2022.

  • Co-designed materials for implementation have been developed and launch is planned for August 2023

Anticipated outputs

  • Baseline understanding of the extent of shared decision making consultations across Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System.
  • Identify clinician barriers and enablers to making shared decision making routine practice in consultations.
  • Shared decision making strategy implemented.
  • Evaluation of the extent of routine delivery of shared decision making consultations across Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System.
