Title: Digital Cognitive Training for NHS Staff Wellbeing: A Feasibility Study

This study explores the feasibility and acceptability of a digital cognitive training tool designed to provide brief “micro breaks” that support NHS staff wellbeing. NHS employees work in environments characterised by sustained cognitive demand, rapid task switching, emotional intensity, and limited opportunities for restorative pauses. These pressures contribute to cognitive overload, reduced attentional capacity, and increased stress, while traditional wellbeing interventions often require protected time that staff cannot easily access.

Short digital cognitive training activities offer a flexible, scalable way to restore attentional resources, reduce perceived stress, and promote resilience during busy working days. Such tools may enhance wellbeing indirectly by improving mental flexibility, attentional control, and cognitive efficiency. These brief cognitive tasks work by temporarily shifting attention away from stressors, allowing the brain to reset, replenish mental resources, and return to work with improved clarity and reduced cognitive fatigue.

The study aims to assess whether this digital micro break tool can be integrated into staff routines, whether participants find it acceptable and beneficial, and what barriers or facilitators influence engagement. Findings will inform organisational decisions about future digital wellbeing initiatives and contribute to understanding how digital interventions can enhance staff resilience and high-quality care.
