Dr Ben Bowers is an Assistant Professor of Primary Care at the University of Cambridge and he is the Co-Theme Lead for NIHR ARC East of England’s Palliative and End-of-Life Care theme.
Ben is a clinical-academic community nurse and an Honorary Nurse Consultant in Palliative Care. In late 2024, Ben was made a Fellow of the Queen's Institute of Community Nursing (QICN). Ben leads a programme of interdisciplinary research focused on improving the care of patients dying at home. His research includes the voices and experiences of patients, families and under-served communities. Ben’s research draws on engineering design, patient safety and social science disciplines. Ben’s first steps into research were through his Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) Fellowship. He completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge in 2022.
In 2023, Ben was announced as one of the 75 nurses and midwives whose work has had an especially significant impact on the NHS since its creation. Ben was awarded the RCGP and Society for Academic Primary Care Outstanding Early Career Researcher Award 2024 and the European Association for Palliative Care Early Researcher Award 2023, in recognition of his exceptional contributions to primary care and palliative care research.
Ben co-founded and leads the UK-wide QICN Community Nursing Research Forum, with over 1000 members, strengthening nursing research capacity, leadership and evidence-based practice in the community. He is supporting several early-career researchers and is passionate about the value of interdisciplinary applied research and public engagement.
Ben is open to approaches to collaborate and supervise ARC Fellows, University of Cambridge MPhil and PhD student projects within his fields of interests. Find more information about Ben's publications and research on ORCID
