Background
People with dementia’s main priority is to remain as independent as possible, where family carers are the main providers of support and one of their main priorities is to understand how they can support their family members with different activities of daily living. Available interventions, including any non-pharmacological programme that focuses on support strategies, have shown some positive outcomes, but they are costly and labour-intensive, and many carers do not access this type of support. On the other hand, online forums for carers have shown positive experiences for them and many benefits including low cost and flexibility for the user. I believe there is a real need to develop a multi-component online intervention accessible to carers that focuses on support strategies for daily activities.
Project Aims
- Identify the available online interventions that focus on support strategies for daily activities.
- Understand the carers' experiences when they provide support on daily tasks.
- Identify the role of support strategies used by carers on the time spent caring for the person living with dementia and activities of daily living.
Project Activity
- Conducting a systematic review on available online interventions (synthesis completed, manuscript in preparation)
- Conducting a systematic review on the carers' experiences of providing support (screening completed, full-text reading ongoing)
- Conducting an SDA (data collected during my PhD): analysis completed. Manuscript in preparation.
- PPIE meeting completed in September 2024. This meeting supported my decision to complete a second systematic review. Carers of people living with dementia expressed their uncertainties when providing support on ADLs.
- Dissemination: presented two posters (Europe's Conference and ARC Symposium)
- Presented the project in a dementia webinar (University of Nottingham
- Presented the project in an Memory Service Network
Anticipated or actual outputs
The results will support a funding application to develop and test an online programme for carers of people with dementia.
