Health, Care or Voluntary Sector Role: CPsychiatry Trainee
Supporting Organisation: Hertfordshire Partnership NHS Trust
I am a first year psychiatry trainee in Hertfordshire, currently working in a child and adolescent inpatient unit. I hope to specialise as an eating disorder psychiatrist in both clinical work and research.
My motivations for applying to the research fellowship include an invaluable opportunity to design and develop my own research project in an area I believe is novel and important for eating disorder patients and services. I hope to develop a good understanding of core research skills through the teaching provided and look forward to discussion and working with my chosen supervisor.
About Anastasia's fellowship project
Title: A study to explore the potential misuse of GLP-1 agonists amongst the eating disorder population
The study aims to investigate the size of the potential misuse issue of the newly licensed weight loss GLP-1 agonist drugs, commonly known as Ozempic and Wigovy, in the eating disorder population. Currently, no published research has investigated this and so the extent of misuse is unknown, despite concerns raised by the Royal College of Psychiatrists Eating Disorder Faculty. The research will provide an early warning to eating disorder clinicians and services and raise awareness. The findings will contribute to the body of evidence that is already known regarding medication misuse in eating disorders such as diuretics, laxatives, metformin, insulin and illicit drugs.
