I am an experienced social worker, with over 20 years experience in the health and care sector. I am passionate about social care and supporting and empowering people to access adult social care. As my skills and experience have grown I have taken an interest in working within social care research to try to highlight challenges within adult social care and incite change as a result.
I was previously a research associate on the SCRIPT programme and this motivated me to want to understand more about research and to take the lead on my own project. Giving me a chance to gain confidence and knowledge in this field, build my research skills further and open up my career opportunities for the future.
About Georgina's fellowship project
Title: Scoping review of barriers and solutions for greater mobilisation of older people in hospital inpatient settings
I currently work as a senior care adviser for Parkinson's UK. As a care team we take enquiries from people with Parkinson’s across the the UK regarding any queries or difficulties that people may have with social care.
One of the most common enquiries we have is around hospital discharge, difficulties people have had during their experience in hospital and the effect this is now having on their discharge. We hear from a significant number of people who have had extended hospital stays with no opportunities to mobilise which has affected their ability to return home independently or at all upon discharge. People often feel that had they had more opportunities to mobilise in hospital they would have not needed social care support on discharge.
I hope that this research will be able to provide guidance on how mobilisation in hospital can be better achieved to result in better outcomes for older people following their stay in hospital. Improving their wellbeing and alleviating pressure on the NHS and social care system as a result.
