The ARC East of England Fellowship supports individuals with hands-on experience to lead small-scale academic projects. By drawing on their real-world expertise, Fellows bring fresh thinking, innovation, and practical relevance to health and care research—providing valuable insights that benefit the entire sector.

The scheme is aimed at people working in health, care, and voluntary service settings across the East of England. It is ideal for those who want to work at the interface of research and practice, deepen their understanding of the research environment, and develop skills in research methodology, service redesign, change management, and the implementation of evidence-based improvements.

Proven track record

Since the schemes establishment in 2010, over 170 ARC Fellowships have been awarded. Our fellows have come from a wide range of clinical and non-clinical backgrounds including Clinical Psychologists, Registered Nurses, Allied Health Professionals, Pharmacists, General Practitioners, Consultant Psychiatrists, Paediatricians and Consultants in Palliative Care, and managers in health and social care services.

Types of fellowship

There are two types of fellowships:

  1. Research: This fellowship focuses on local applied research and evaluation projects, including audits. It aims to build local capacity for evidence-informed practice, supporting fellows in generating and using evidence to improve services.
  2. Impact: This fellowship is designed for individuals interested in implementing and disseminating evidence-based improvements in health and care settings. It supports the development of knowledge and skills for achieving real-world impact from research.

Applicants can apply for either the ARC Research Fellowship or ARC Impact Fellows.

What should projects focus on?

If the Research or Impact project is NHS based, we strongly encourage aligning your project focus to the Darzi review of the NHS. This broadly includes the following areas of focus:

  • Primary prevention of ill health and prevention of escalation of health needs
  • Support for treating people away from acute care
  • Support for the health and care workforce
  • Supporting elective care recovery and supporting people waiting

For Research or Impact projects in social care or other non-NHS settings, the applicant can prioritise their own research/impact questions.
