Project PEOLC33

Investigating inequalities in access to hospice care in Peterborough and Fenland

This project developed and disseminated a document outlining available palliative care services across the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough ICS area leading to greater access to palliative care medications during the out-of-hours period when there are great inequalities of access to medications.

Background

An ARC-funded systematic literature review (PEOLC1) highlighted inequalities in access to hospice services in the UK.

This project had two components:

  1. Development and dissemination of a document outlining available Palliative Care services, suitable for distribution to patients and family carers across the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough ICS area, with a particular focus on Peterborough and Fenland.
  2. Developing greater access to Palliative Care medications during the out-of-hours period, when there are great inequalities of access to medications. At present there is no pharmacy open 24/7 in the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough ICS area

Project Activity

  • Worked with Cambridgeshire and Peterborough ICS PEOLC Board on development of leaflet
  • Worked with Cambridgeshire and Peterborough ICS Pharmacy Team on greater access to pharmacies across the 24 hour period

Outputs

  1. Development and dissemination of a document outlining available Palliative Care services, suitable for distribution to patients and family carers across the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough ICS area, with a particular focus on Peterborough and Fenland.
  2. Development of greater access to Palliative Care medications during the out-of-hours period, when there are great inequalities of access to medications.
