ARC Fellowship 2022 Application guidance

Applicants for the 2022 ARC Fellowship need to read the following carefully and then download the relevant documents (found at the bottom of this page).  Note that there are application documents that are sent to us by the applicant, plus supporting documentation that the applicant must arrange to be sent by others directly to us.

1. Application form

You will be asked to state your reasons for applying for the fellowship, and to describe your professional objectives. In particular, you will be asked to discuss which implementation or research project you would like to do as an ARC fellow, and to outline the project proposal in some detail. The project proposal is the most important part of your application.

  • Research Fellowship application

You should choose a project that interests you. It may be something that you have wanted to do for a long time, but haven't had the time to dedicate to it. If possible, try to align your project topic with one of the research themes of ARC EoE, this is because our ability to acommodate research projects from outside the ARC's research themes is limited by our ability to provide two experienced senior investigators to supervise you. If possible, contact the theme lead to advise you on your project protocol to ensure it is doable and fits within the theme. If you do wish to propose a project from outside the ARC’s themes, then try to make contact with possible supervisors prior to submitting your application and to name them in your application.

  • Implementation fellowship application

You should choose a project that interests you and will benefit the organisation. There is no need to align the project with the ARC’s themes, but you need to find a senior person within the organisation (your ‘Local Enabler’) who will be well-placed to support the project once it gets underway. The Local Enabler should be a senior person (e.g. line manager, departmental head, Trust executive, NHS consultant, R&D manager) who is in a position to supervise you in the implementation of your project, as this may, for example, involve facilitating service change and staff training. You are also advised, via the ARC Office, to make contact with the team who will be running the implementation fellowship to discuss your intended project before submitting your application.

2. Curriculum Vitae

CVs should include employment, educational background, publications (if any, but having publications is not essential to your application) and interests.

3. Photograph

Recent passport image or equivalent (.jpg file)

The 3 documents above should be emailed to the ARC's Business Manager at Emma.Dickerson@cpft.nhs.uk on or before Tuesday 30 November 2021. The subject field of the e-mail should include the applicant’s name and “Application for the ARC fellowship 2022” e.g. A. N. Applicant: Application for the ARC fellowship 2022.

Additional documents to be emailed directly to the ARC's Business Manager

1. Institutional letter of reference and organisational support

Institutional letters of reference must be submitted on the form provided (download here). The referee should be your Chief Executive, Clinical Director or someone who can legitimately authorise the use of some of your contracted hours on the ARC fellowship, and can confirm that this time will be protected for fellowship work including attendance at the teaching workshops and action learning sets. Should confirmation be given, a request for backfill payments (download here) may also be submitted at this time.

2. Professional Letter of Reference from someone who knows you, stating:

  • The period of time the referee has known you and in what capacity;
  • Your strengths and weaknesses;
  • The calibre of your work and your potential for applied health research, service redesign and evaluation;
  • Any particular qualifications or reasons why you should be selected for an ARC Fellowship.

There is no form for the letter of reference, your referee should use a Word document as an email attachment.

3. Implementation Fellowship applicants only

Implementation fellowship applicants must also include a statement from your ‘Local Enabler’ indicating that they will be willing to provide local organisational advice and backing to enable your project to proceed, and that they will attend quarterly meetings with you and the ARC supervisors for the duration of the project.

There is no form for the statement, your proposed Local Enabler should use a Word document as an email attachment.

It is your responsibility to ensure that the supporting documentation is emailed directly to the ARC's Business Manager at  Emma.Dickerson@cpft.nhs.uk on or before Tuesday 30 November 2021. The subject field of the e-mail should include the applicant’s name and “Application for the ARC fellowship 2022” e.g. A. N. Applicant: Application for the ARC fellowship 2022.
