Kaat De Backer is a specialist midwife in perinatal mental health at the Rosie Hospital in Cambridge. Her research interests are in trauma and its impact during the perinatal period. Before her midwifery training, Kaat worked at the Department of Primary Health Care and Family Medicine at Ghent University, Belgium. She also worked for the international NGO The Network: Towards Unity for Health, applying her degrees in Arts and Humanities, and International Political Sciences. Kaat currently holds a clinical role as Specialist Midwife for Perinatal Mental Health, providing midwifery care for women with severe or complex mental health problems. Her NIHR ARC fellowship will concentrate on understanding health professionals’ views in maternity settings to ask about a history of sexual trauma, with the overall aim to improve the care and outcomes for pregnant women with sexual trauma.
